Prices for your dream deck in the City of Calgary and Calgary area vary greatly, as you would expect. There are a large number of different factors that affect the overall cost of building a new deck or upgrading an existing deck.
A rough guide to pricing would be from $21.0 to $71.0 per square foot. A standard 12' x 4' deck cost from $3,528 to $11,928. Of course, there are other issues currently like supply and demand issues with supply chains, and the results of inflation on materials and labour. Calgary deck builders will be able to give you more accurate pricing for your own deck, or custom deck as you walk through the deck designing and deck building process.
Another important factor many homeowners overlook when pricing a deck is the planning and foundation work involved. A properly engineered foundation is essential to prevent settling and ensure long-term stability. Replacing a deck in Calgary typically falls within a similar price range as building a new one. Homeowners may see some cost savings if the existing foundation piles can be safely reused and meet current structural requirements. Demolition and removal of the old deck is a separate consideration—when handled by the contractor, this is usually an additional cost, while completing the removal yourself can reduce upfront expenses.
Yes, you will require a building permit if your deck height is over 0.6m (approximately two feet) above grade at any point. You are building a covered deck such as an enclosed sundeck, a deck with open rafters or a gazebo (this is considered an addition and may require a Development Permit).
The best time to start your deck in a city like Calgary is after the ground has thawed. The ground usually freezes up to 6-7 feet deep during the winter and that needs to thaw so you can create holes for your piles. Powerful machines can dig through some of that deep frost, but it may cause movement in the spring and summer. The best time for these types of projects is in spring and early summer.
The other option is to wait till last fall when prices might be a little lower, and the winter hasn't set in yet. You will need to wait till the following year to enjoy your new deck fully, but it may work for some who have a schedule that requires that.

The answer to this question is maybe but most likely not. The Property assessment corporation typically assigns a value to a house in a neighbourhood based on value and square footage.
The building and development permit office doesn't share information with the assessment office so just like basement developments they don't add decks to the value calculation. However, a special assessment to your home or disclosure to the assessment office of upgrades can increase your property tax because of the increase in home value.
